------------------

REGISTRUM ABBATIĈ JOHANNIS WHETHAMSTEDE

ABBATIS MONASTERII SANCTI ALBANI

Edited by Henry Thomas Riley

Longman & Co ..., 1872

Hardback, 26 * 16.5 cm, xlviii + 480 pages (Vol I) & lxxviii +562 pages (Vol II)

There are significant medieval manuscripts originating from the Abbey of St Alban, and many of the more important were transcribed and published in the latter part of the 19th century.

Volume I records the events relating to the time when John of Whethamstede (Wheathampstead) was Abbot - from 1452-1461. In addition to more religious matters there are many references to property owned by the Abbey - such as the erection of a horse mill at Watteforde (Watford). Volume II contains further texts to 1487.

Both volumes contain excellent indexes and short summaries of the main events which helps to locate the original texts, which are reproduced, as they were written, in Latin.
