Guide to Old Hertfordshire

The Bedford Times

And General Advertiser for Beds, Herts, Hunts, Bucks, Cambs & Northamptonshire

Newspapers

Examples from the issue of 12 August, 1854

While the paper claims to cover the counties of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire

in practice it covers very little news that isn't linked with Bedfordshire.

This advert is the only one specifically linked to Hertfordshire - and Preston is close to the Bedfordshire County Boundary.

This paper is included as a warning that many papers concentrated on the area where they were published - but claimed far greater coverage.

More information about Thomas Harwood Darton, who was giving up the farm.

The cutting on the left contains all the Hertfordshire news I could find in the paper, buried in "sound bites" of International and National News.

The only other references to Hertfordshire that I could spot were agents for nationally advertised goods - in the above case for The Paris Chocolate Company.

Mr. J Matthews, chemist of Royston and Mr John Gatward of Hitchin, were selling Long's Non-Poisonous Sheep and Cattle Dressing Compositions.

Dr. Pascoe's Infallibe Globules were being sold by Roberts of St Albans, Walker of Hitchin and Bully of Baldock.
