Norton is a parish and small village, 38 miles from London, and one mile north-west from Baldock railway station, in the hundred of Cashio, Hitchin union and county court district, rural deanery of Baldock, archdeaconry of St. Albans, and diocese of Rochester, bounded on the east by the river Ivel, a small stream rising at Baldock, which separates it from the parishes of Bygrave and Radwell. The Church of St Nicholas, an ancient structure, has a nave, chancel, south porch, and tower with embattled parapet and 3 bells. The register dates from 1579. The living is a vicarage, value £96, with residence, in the gift of F. Pym, Esq., and held by the Rev. George James Pierson, M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Here is a Free school for twelve children, endowed with £16 per annum. At Wilbury Hill, which is partly in this parish, and a mile and a half south-west of the village, are the remains of a Roman camp, of about seven acres; half the vallum is defaced. Roman coins have been found, and the Icknield Street, an ancient Roman way, passes over the Wilbury Hills to Ickleford. Francis Pym, Esq., a minor, is lord of the manor. The principal copyholder is Morris Prior, Esq., of Baldock. The population in 1861 was 352, and the acreage is 1,780.
