In the town the arrival of the railway would have had a major effect on the amount of horse-drawn traffic along the turnpike road. Who would travel on a stage coach through Tring when it was possible to travel much faster and more cheaply by train. Within years the stage coaches had vanished and instead Inns such as the Rose and Crown provided regular transport to and from the railway station.
