J. T. Lane

of Hemel Hempstead & Berkhamsted

(Circa 1865)

Photographers were not that common in the mid 1860's. For instance the 1866 Post Office Directory only lists 14 photographers for the whole of Hertfordshire, with T. J. Lane [sic] in Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, J. Swabey. in Lower Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, and J. Nash in Berkhamsted (continuing there until about 1886).

It would seem that J. T. Lane was only in Marlowes for a short time, and cannot be located in the 1861 or 1871 census in or near Hemel Hempstead.  The following extract from a detailed biography of Henry J Godbold, of Hastings, suggests that after taking photographs for a short time at Hemel he joined a London company, and then worked in Hastings.

The arrangement whereby a photographer from Godbold & Co. took photographic portraits at Whiteman's Library lasted until the early summer of 1868. By June 1868, Edwin Whiteman was employing the services of Mr J. T. Lane, a photographer from the London firm of Gush & Ferguson, to manage the photographic portrait studio situated in his bookshop.
