A Survey of Sandridge in 1726

[There is a Web Page for Sandridge]

In 1726 J. P. Desmartz drafted "An Exact Survey of all the Demesnes, Copyholds and Freeholds in the Mannor of Sandridge in Hertfordshire, together with the names of all the Fields, Copyholders, Freeholders and Tenants of the said Mannor."

This map is deposited in the British Library (Manuscript Department) bound in a huge book (Althrop P.3) which contains estate maps of properties all over the country held by Earl Spencer. Because of the size of the original the map, which is on a scale of 13 inches to the mile, it has been cut into six sheets, and unfortunately this has left the village of Sandridge on the corners of four sheets.

Around the edge of the map are listings of all the fields and properties, with their owners/tenants, reference numbers and areas, together with a summary listing, which is reproduced here (with abbreviations expanded). Where there are differences in the headings of the full listings this is noted in footnotes.

It should be noted that this is from my working document, which contains further notes and which hopefully will be expanded when I have time to revisit the British Library to do further work.
