Session 2

What happened to

Francis Lewin and his family?

In about 1790 John Lewin (senior) wrote

Francis Lewin the first son of John & Sarah Lewin was Born Aug 10 1777

On the 25th July 1857 John Lewin (junior) wrote

Francis, John and Elizabeth Now Mrs Horwood are all Three Now Still Living.
We know that Francis was born in 1777 and was still alive in 1857

Task: Locate Francis in the 1851 census using Ancestry and check if he was still alive at the time of the 1861 census.

1851 Census - Water Mill, Hilborough, Norfolk

Edward Leeds Head 34 Miller employing 8 men Kelling, Norfolk
Sarah L Leeds Wife 30   Hornington, Norfolk
Emma Louisa Leeds Daur 11m   Hilborough, Norfolk
Francis Lewin Father-in-Law 75 Formerly Miller St Albans, Herts
Sarah L Lewin Mother-in-Law 73 Millers wife Lamington, Warks
Mary Lewin Sister-in-Law 26 Millers daughter Hornington, Norfolk
Eliza Frost Servant 16 Nurse Maid

Longford, Norfolk

John Warters Servant 21 Carter Sheringham, Suffolk

Francis Lewin was not found in 1861 census - Edward Leeds was at the same address as in 1851, and the in-laws were not there.

[Subsequent research shows that the place where Sarah L Leeds was born was actually Honingham, Norfolk. To avoid confusion I will refer to this place by its correct name in all future comments.]

Result of Investigation

This is a very informative find, in that it tells us that Francis had been a miller, that he married a Sarah  from Warwickshire, almost certainly before 1821 (when the oldest daughter, Sarah was born). The couple has at least two daughters, Sarah born circa 1821 and Mary born circa 1825, both at Honingham, Norfolk.

Unfortunately the search is taking us outside Hertfordshire but it is appropriate to find Francis's marriage to Sarah, his death (and possibly a will) and try to identify their children before abandoning this line of enquiry.
