Loz (amaro_dadrus @t hotmail.co.uk) writes from the West Midlands saying: I am looking for a Joseph Rolph born around 1832/35. He states in the 1871 census he was born in Barnet   I can find nothing about Joseph jr until  he got married in 1861 in Peckam. with his father's name also Joseph. I know a bit of his later life then but before that nothing at all. He died in 1879.

While you say Joseph's father's name was Joseph it was actually Robert Rolfe and your ancestor Joseph was born at Monken Hadley, which was in Middlesex at the time, later became part of Hertfordshire, and later still became part of Greater London. The nearest urban centre throughout this period was Barnet.

Familysearch records that Robert Rolfe married Martha Cooper at Monken Hadley on 29th April 1821 and had the following children baptised at the church:

Elizabeth (27 March 1824)

Robert (27 November 1825)

Ann (23 Sept, 1827)

Mary Ann (1 February, 1829)

Joseph (17 October 1830)

William (23 December 1832)

John James (24 May 1835)

At the time of the 1841 census Martha and all the children apart from John James  were living in Mary Payne's Place, High Street, Hadley, Barnet, and I assume that both Robert senior and baby John James had died.

Joseph was still there living at Mary Payne's Place at the time of the 1851 census - the household consisting of:

It is possible that the 3 year old Robert was a grandchild - possibly the son of Robert (baptised 1825) who could have married and moved away from the district.

I did not find Joseph in the 1861 census but as you know in 1871 Joseph Rolph was living at Camberwell with his wife and young family.

If you can add to the information given above tell me.
