Family Events National Burial Index
and the HFHS Hertfordshire Index

The National Burial Index is a set of two
CDs produced in 2001 by the Federation of Family History Societies. It starts
to fill a gap in the IGI at familysearch,
and the VRI, which concentrate on baptisms and
marriages, and the first release contains details of some 5,000,000
burials - mostly between 1800 and 1850 -
although there are some earlier entries. The data has been prepared by local
family history societies, including the Hertfordshire
Family & Population History Society - and a fair number of
Hertfordshire parishes (but not all!!!) have been indexed - to a total of some
84,000 burials. This list of parishes covered and the date range covered is
easily accessed.
The discs are simple to use, and the
extracted data can easily be pasted into tabular form as the following
examples show:
Thrale
is a rare surname closely associated with Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire and a
search for the surname on the burials to 1825 disc produces the following
entries:

As can be seen, it picks up a variety of
references - and the low number in Herts and Beds relates to the selection of
parishes and the fact that most parishes have only been indexed from 1800.
Unfortunately no ages have been recorded - and are almost certainly absent on
the registers - which may, however, include additional information such as
"wife of ..." or an occupation or address- which is why you should
always check the microfilm of the register. Where there are memorials these can add important additional
information.
