Receipt and Conveyance relating to a Mortgage
St Albans, 1809

I Ann Smith the Daughter Heiress at Law and Executrix of Thomas Smith late of Hill End Yeoman deceased do hereby acknowledge to have received of Edward Garrett the Son and Heir of Edward Garrett late of the Borough of St Albans Maltster deceased the Sum of Two Hundred and fifty six pounds five shillings being the principal money and Interest due to me on a Mortgage of certain premises at St Albans made by the said Edward Garrett deceased to the said Thomas Smith my father bearing date the fourth day of March one thousand seven hundred and sixty and in consideration thereof I do hereby undertake and agree to make and execute unto the said Edward Garrett the son or to whom else he shall appoint a good and effective Reconveyance Assignment and Assurance of the Premises comprized in the said Mortgage as and when required and to procure all necessary parties to join me therein so far as relates to such Mortgages Title As Witness my hand this 4th day of March 1809.

A small slip of paper which identifies Ann Smith (with her signature) as the daughter of Thomas Smith of Hill End, and Edward son of Edward Garrett (or Garratt?), Maltster, who have premises in St Albans (perhaps connected with brewing?).
