Education in Tring

Marriage of Headmistress. – Miss Harrietta Hollywood, former headmistress of Gravelly Infants’ School, was married to the Rev. Thomas Dewar Pollock, at Gretna Green, Scotland, on Christmas Eve. Before she left the town her friends presented her with a cheque to mark their appreciation of her 15 years’ service at Gravelly.

Tring School was also in need of new accommodation as the buildings in the High Street were clearly too small. In 1947 the Temperance Hall, in Christchurch Road, served as a classroom and school canteen while a wartime National Fire Service hut were used to teach crafts. To meet this need the Council agreed that 4 Ministry of War huts on land adjoining the Recreation Ground in Mortimer Hill could be used as classrooms for 5 years, and it wasn’t until 1957 that the Senior School finally left the High Street for a single site at Mortimer Hill.

SCHOOL SPORTS

Tring Secondary Modern School held their annual sports in showery weather on the Cricket Field on Wednesday week. Owing to the slippery surface the high jump events were postponed until Friday.

Some good performances were recorded, and Councillor A. E. Porter, who presented the medals and trophies, congratulated the contestants upon the keenness of their efforts. …

Champion house was Massey, 81 points, with Francis 72, Hobson 67 and Brown 56. Raymond Casemore, with six firsts, won the individual championship medal for boys. The girls’ medal went to P. Brooks.

Education of a very different kind went on at Pendley Manor, a very large Victorian house which had been used by the Land Army. In 1945 Dorian Williams set it up to be a revolutionary new type of adult education centre. By 1947 it was in full swing with a varied lecture programme and non-vocational courses aimed at employees of large firms such as Vauxhall Motors, Carreras and Cadburys. At about this time an article in Personnel Management and Welfare said that reports from Vauxhall Motors whose employees had attended mid-week cultural courses at Pendley Manor stated that those attending were more responsive to reasoned argument, more alive, better adjusted to the group in which they worked, and generally improved in their attitude to their job. Whether or not this is true in all cases, it could be anticipated that employers would benefit in the long run by an all-round improvement of their employees.

On February [the St Paul’s Youth Fellowship] went down to Pendley to hear the first of a series entitled "Pages from the Past," in which all the staff take part. This week’s "page" was on the Victorian Era. It was well worth a visit.
