OSBORNE, Standon & Hertford, late 19th century

November 2001

Susan Le Grange (susanlg @t yebo.co.za) of  Johannesburg South Africa.writes: Herbert George Osborne (23/08/1893) and Ivy May Osborne /Young (22/04/1898) were my Grandmother and Grandfather, both are buried at All Saints.  My Grandmothers family came from the Standon, Green End area and my Grandfather from Hertford.  My Grandmothers parents were Metford Henry Young (7 April 1861) and Elizabeth Paul (1864).  Her siblings were Victor, Harry, Edith, Amos and John known as Laurie.  My grandfathers parents were John Osborne and Elizabeth (or possibly Susan) Pomfret.  This is as far as I got with my research.  I have found my grandfathers first wifes family (Amy Cakebread - also buried at All Saints) and have located living relatives, who have supplied me with photos and other info.  I believe that the Osbornes were quite a well known East Hertfordshire Family.  Do you know of the Family, or can you help me or point me in the right direction for my research.

While you clearly know a lot you don't specify the sources of your information in your message so it is difficult to suggest which additional sources you should consult - but have a look at the web pages starting with Family Events to guide you through the kinds of records available. The 1881 census (widely available on CD worldwide) contains the following entry which clearly refers to your Metford Young, and there may well be other relevant entries.
