Michelle Duerden (michelleduerden @t googlemail.com) of Cyprus writes: I am trying to find photos of 3 public houses.

1) The Globe - 202 Fore St Edmonton
2) The Bell & Crown - Hertford
3) The King's Head - Hertford

All run by a Mr John Ellis in the 1950s and 60s

This site concentrates on Hertfordshire prior to the end of the First World War, and my reference library has very little after that date - and nothing on Edmonton (which is not in Hertfordshire). However I can I can provide some information on the Kings Head (which was only a beer retailer, and at least prior to 1937 did not have a full licence) and the Bell & Crown.

Kings Head, 24 St Andrews Street, Hertford

King's Head, 24 St Andrew's Street

From post card by Frith taken in 1929 á

ß From post card by E. Munnings, Hertford, circa 1905

From Old Directories (only some dates examined)

Thomas Davis, beer retailer, (1878-1890)

George Chapman, beer retailer, (1912-1922)

George Henry Henderson, beer retailer (1933)

William Barral, beer retailer, Kings Head (1937)

closed down 1955 (Had been McMullen's tied house)

A larger version of this modern picture is available at Dead Pubs. It seems that the beer house was only half this property as the old photographs show part was a shop.

Bell & Crown, Cowbridge, Hertford

This Public house was purchased in the 1840s in the 1840s and was part of the McMullen estate. It closed in the 1990s.

The 1861 census showed that James Fisher, junior, was the publican. In 1855 his father James Fisher senior, was a carrier & shopkeeper in Cowbridge.

A larger version of this modern picture, together with details of publicans between 1866 and 1939 are available at Dead Pubs.

I have no pictures of this public house. You could try HALS or Hertford Museum.
