The 1744 Turnpike Act

The Turnpike is set up in Harpenden (Harden)

... And whereas the Road from a place called Neales Corner, in the Town of St Alban in the said County of Hertford, to the Town of Bedford in the County of Bedford, contains Thirty Miles in Length, and the same in most Parts thereof is very ruinous, and out of Repair, and there is but one Toll paid for the whole Way, by reason whereof the Money arising by the said Toll is not sufficient to amend the same: And whereas the Trustees, appointed to put the said recited Acts in Execution, have caused a Turnpike to be erected and set up at a Place called Harden in the said County of Hertfordshire, above four miles from the Town of St Alban aforesaid, and above one mile from the Town of Luton in the said County of Bedford; ...
