How To ...

This site is set up to provide information on the key elements of research local and family history in Hertfordshire. This is done by linking together web pages which explain the types of records and which include examples of how things can be done. This is being done on an incremental basis - with topics being added when there is a perceived need.

Family Events - covers the key life events of genealogy such as birth, marriage and death - with related topics such as wills and civil registration.

Census Returns - includes pages on each census, including many examples of the 1881 census on CD, and information on the online 1901 census.

Directories - explains what kinds of directories exists - such as the Pigot's Directories for 1823, 1832 and 1839 - and also other lists such as poll books

Education - still needs to be developed - but will cover school records, etc. It currently leads to some examples of St Albans Schools.

Ephemera - Examples of miscellaneous document sources.

Financial Records - not yet implemented

Books - Reviews of Hertfordshire Books

Maps - look at the maps available to the historian from the early maps to online modern maps. Large scale OS maps from about 1880 are available online at old-maps.

Newspapers - details of many newspapers that contain information of Hertfordshire.
