Detail of
Dury's map
showing the village of Sandridge
I was born in Sandridge in
1938 and my ancestors in the village date back to Jonathan Cox,
who was living in the village in 1688. My Great Great
Grandfather
Dolphin Smith moved to
Water End Farm in about 1845. My Great Grandfather
Jacob Reynolds
moved to Hammonds Farm in 1862, later moving to Heath Farm,
Bernards Heath. Shortly after I was born my parents moved away from the area but I returned to Hertfordshire in 1962 and became interested in family history. In the 1980s I started a major survey of the 19th century farmers in Sandridge and nearby villages, and during the 1990s I collected a significant amount of information on Bernards Heath with a view to writing a book. The result was A Short History of Bernards Heath and the talks The Brickmakers of St Albans, The Road Through Harpenden and Poaching and Petty Theiving in St Albans. In addition I accumulated a vast collection of notes, Victorian press cuttings, etc., which have not been written up for publication. |
